The history of the Sri Parvathi Jadala Ramalingeshwara Swamy Temple is deeply intertwined with the Treta Yuga and the legends of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to local lore, after Parashurama fulfilled his vow of rid-ding the world of tyrannical kings twenty-one times, he sought penance to cleanse himself of the sin of "Kshatriya-Vadha" (killing of warriors). To appease Lord Shiva, he resolved to install and worship $108$ Shiva Lingas across the Indian subcontinent.

It is firmly believed by devotees that the Linga at Cheruvugattu is the final and $108^{th}$ installation in this sacred series, making it a site of immense spiritual completion.The temple's name, "Jadala," carries a unique physical and mystical significance. Legend says that during Parashurama’s penance, Lord Shiva appeared with his matted hair (Jata) flowing, and the goddess Parvathi was present with her long plaits. The Shiva Linga itself is said to have "Jata" (matted hair) patterns naturally etched onto its surface. Another popular story tells of Parashurama testing the divinity of the Linga by striking it with his axe (Parashu); a mark on the crown of the deity is still shown to pilgrims today as evidence of this divine encounter, proving the Linga’s "Swayambhu" (self-manifested) nature.
